🚂 Le SchafbergBahn : histoire et caractéristiques du train à crémaillère
If you’re looking for a unique experience in Austria, the SchafbergBahn is a must-see. This red cogwheel train, one of the oldest still in service, has been climbing the slopes of the Schafberg mountain since 1893. It’s one of the most beautiful excursions in the Salzkammergut region, especially if you’re staying around Lake Wolfgang. Perfect for families, this half-day excursion can easily be incorporated into your road trip itinerary.
Today’s plan: ride to the summit on this red steam train, whose tracks wind their way up the mountainside and through beautiful alpine scenery. This historic railway takes us on a steep, roughly 35-minute ride to the summit of Schafberg, where there is an observation deck and a restaurant. The 360-degree view is breathtaking, with lakes, forests, and a view of the steep rock face.

🍽️ Où manger près du SchafbergBahn : notre adresse coup de cœur
We didn't have lunch at the restaurant at the top of Schafberg, but at a place just a three-minute drive from the train station: the Jausenstation Aschinger restaurant. We enjoyed a cold lunch consisting of a platter of local cold cuts and cheeses, homemade chocolate cakes, and artisanal ice cream. The view of the lake is simply exceptional and the service impeccable. This simple stop in the heart of nature, with fresh, local produce, reminded me of Slovenia.

We loved this experience, which was exactly what I imagined Austria to be: wooden houses with pretty facades, a red cogwheel train, mountains and lakes, local food and a generous welcome.
